What is the prostate and where is it located in dogs and cats?

The prostate is a gland that lies in your male pet’s pelvis- just behind the bladder and below the rectum. This positioning means that-unlike in humans- an enlarged prostate will affect your pet’s ability to urinate and defecate normally. The prostate gland begins to develop at puberty under the effect of testosterone in un-neutered animals. It will achieve its full, normal size by the time your pet is about 2 years old. The function of the prostate gland is to provide nourishment for sperm cells in the form of prostatic fluid.

What are the symptoms of BPH in pets??
  • Pain or discomfort on urination
  • Frequent, strained attempts to urinate
  • Painful and strained defecation
  • Abnormal gait: you may notice your pet walking with very small steps and his rear legs straight and stiff
  • Discharge from the penis

What about Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is actually very uncommon in dogs and cats and the occurrence of this is unaffected by neutering. Benign prostatic hypertrophy (swelling) (BPH) is far more common and, for the most part, causes the same symptoms. If, however, your pet has been looking unwell and lethargic and you have noticed a decreased appetite and weight-loss, it may be a good idea for your peace of mind to take your dog or cat to the vet. A vet will be able to examine the prostate and do some investigations to confirm whether or not your pet has cancer of the prostate gland. Prostate cancer is not generally operated on in pets as this will lead to incontinence, will be useless if the cancer has spread around the body and is technically very difficult surgery.

My dog seems to be having pain when urinating- is it definitely his prostate causing this?

Not necessarily - there are a number of other conditions that may affect your dog’s ability to urinate normally including stones in the urinary tract or, more commonly, urinary tract infections. It is best for you to have your pet seen by a vet in order to establish what the cause of his symptoms is. For natural treatment of pet UTI’s please see our Pet Alive UTI Free remedy.
